CD InstructionsPC SettingsDisplay Resolution. The text portion of the book is presented as digital images (or "pictures") of the pages, each 750 pixels (dots) wide and 1076 pixels high. If the PC display resolution is set to 800 by 600 pixels, the page-images should almost fill the width of the screen. If the PC display resolution is set to a higher value (e.g., 1024 x 768 pixels), the page-images will appear narrower on the screen, but more of the page-image will be visible. If the page-image appears too small to comfortably read, the PC display resolution should be set to a lower value, 800x600 pixels for example. (For Windows, select: Start/ Settings/ Control Panel/ Display/ Settings/ Screen resolution = 800 by 600 pixels.) Internet Browser. The page-images on this CD are displayed with a standard HTML program that is compatible with most Internet browsers. Some browsers have a function that automatically resizes images to fit the display screen, which may distort the page-images unless that function is disabled. The Internet browser should use the Times New Roman font to duplicate the look of the page-images. Printing. The page-images should fit on standard letter-size paper when printed from the browser if the browser Page Setup options use page margins as close to zero as possible. Most browsers provide a menu on a right mouse-button click on a page-image with options to print just the image, or at least save just the image to a temporary folder for later printing by a graphics program (Windows XP Paint, for example). Page NavigationHere are some details on how to move around within the CD volume. The CD Contents or "home" page includes links that take the place of the printed volume's table of contents. Also at the top and bottom of each page are navigation lines with the following clickable links:
Note: The biographical sketches are in the order of the generational
number assigned to each family member. Even so, some younger children's
sketches occur at some distance in the book from their parent's sketch.
In this case, to find a child's sketch it is helpful to
rapidly click on the "Page+" link at the
top of each page until a passing generational number indicates the
desired sketch has just been missed. The search can then be reversed
by clicking on "Page-" for a few pages until the desired sketch is found.
